About Squad Night
Squad Night answers one question: what can this group play together tonight? It only works if the facts are right, so here's who we are, how we're paid, and where every fact comes from.
Independent, and honest about money
Squad Night is an independent site. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Valve, Steam, PCGamingWiki or any game publisher. Right now the site makes no money: there are no ads, no affiliate links and no sponsors. If that changes, the disclosure page will say so first.
Money never decides which three games you get. Picks come from the rules below, and sponsored or affiliate content is always labeled and kept separate from them.
Sources
- Steam store (the store's public app details and review summary, plus store page tags): price and discount (US store), whether it's free, the Online Co-op and Remote Play Together categories, header image, review score and user tags. Store links go straight to the official Steam page.
- PCGamingWiki: max online players, LAN, local play and crossplay platforms, from the multiplayer section of each game's page (read through the public MediaWiki API). Where the wiki cites a source for crossplay, we link it too. PCGamingWiki content is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0; facts we take from it are credited on every game page and shared under the same license in our dataset.
- Official publisher and platform pages: support FAQs, patch notes and platform store pages for cross-play, cross-progression and player limits. We quote the exact sentence, note the day we read it, and re-fetch the page on every refresh to check the wording is still there.
Statuses
- ✓ official comes from the developer, publisher or platform holder. These win over everything else.
- ✓ PCGW comes from PCGamingWiki, a community wiki with strict citation norms. It's good, but it can lag behind patches.
- unverified means we couldn't find a source we trust. We never fill the gap with a guess. Unverified games can still show up as "could work" picks, but they rank lower and come with a warning.
How the picker decides
- A game needs Steam's Online Co-op category to count.
- Player count: a verified max at or above your group size passes. A verified max below it rules the game out. An unknown max drops to "could work".
- Platforms: an all-PC group just needs the Steam version. If anyone is on a console, every console in the group has to be on the game's verified crossplay list. We don't infer console availability any other way.
- Budget uses the current US Steam price. If a game is over budget but supports Steam Remote Play Together and everyone is on PC, it can still qualify, because only the host has to own it. We flag it, since streaming quality varies.
- Time is our editorial take on session length. Vibe comes from Steam's user tags. Picks are then ranked by Steam review score and how many reviews back it.
Known limits
- Prices are from the US Steam store only. Console prices and other regions can differ.
- Cross-progression is verified only where an official page says so. Most games are still marked unverified.
- Crossplay can depend on the storefront: Steam, Microsoft Store and Epic can each behave differently. Notes on each game page explain the details where we know them.
- Some official pages render their text with JavaScript, so the automatic wording check can't confirm them. Those claims were read by hand on the date shown.
FAQ
Where do the player counts come from?
From official publisher or platform pages where we can find one, otherwise from PCGamingWiki. Each game page shows the source, a quote where we have one, and the date we read it. 89 of 111 games have a verified max; the rest are labeled unverified.
Does crossplay mean my console friends can join?
Only if the game page lists their console under verified crossplay. We only mark crossplay when a source says so, and the notes explain storefront catches (for example Steam versus Microsoft Store).
How current are the prices?
Prices come from the US Steam store and were last refreshed on 2026-10-29. Sales end and prices differ by region, so check the store before you buy.
Why does a game I know is co-op not show up?
We only list games that carry Steam's Online Co-op category (or where PCGamingWiki confirms online co-op), that have been released, and that are in our current catalog. The catalog is still growing.
What does Remote Play Together mean for the budget filter?
With Steam Remote Play Together only the host needs to own the game, so an all-PC group can sometimes play a game that is over budget for everyone else. We flag those picks because streaming quality depends on the host connection.
How do you make money?
We don't yet. If we add affiliate links or sponsors, they will be labeled, listed on the disclosure page, and kept out of the picks.
How do I report a wrong fact?
Email hello@squadnight.example.com with the game and a link to a source. We fix verified errors on the next refresh.
